blt took a new look at tct asia with new machine, new materials, new processes and new solutions, presenting a visual feast in the era of mass production with various industry application cases.

 

blt presented more than 70 application cases, covering a wide range of industries such as aviation, aerospace, engines, molds, medical, dental, oil drilling, motor racing, electronics, parts with forming accuracy, art and crafts, which highlighted blt’s process and technology features and advantages in the four directions of “large (large size)”, “accurate (high accuracy)”, “special (special materials)” and “optimal (optimal design)”.

 


#bigger than bigger, constantly breaking through the “big” size

the scaled model of long march v rocket and creatively-designed tree are the large-sized structural parts in the long-axis type, both of which are integrally formed by blt-s500 series system.

the scaled model of rocket, a large and thin-walled structural part with a size of 400mm x 400mm x 1400mm, is made of titanium alloy, and costs a print time of 150 hours. it consists of a grille frame and continuous curved surfaces in the surface, and is equipped with shaped piping inside and different rudder wing structures outside, demonstrating the ability of blt to integrally form structures with extremely-large size and high accuracy.

the creatively-designed tree is a structural part with large size and multi-optimized design feature (part size of 400mm x 400mm x 1100mm). the entire bionic tree incorporates multiple difficult machining features such as thin-walled sandwich, irregularly-shaped and curved topology, internal runners, and spatially-hollowed lattice structure, demonstrating the advantages of blt in integral design and complex structure forming.

the integrated structure of engine, a rotary structural part with a size of 820mm x 820mm x 400mm (including substrate), is made of titanium alloy and costs a print time of 175 hours. this is a concept product designed and manufactured by the product development and innovation design team of blt with the theme of “common features of engine creatively-designed structure self-forming without support”. the exhibit fully demonstrates the innovative design concept of additive manufacturing products and the processing capability of blt in large parts with complex features, and shows the superiorities of metal 3d printing in integral, lightweight and innovative design and engineering applications in the aerospace field.

 


# accurate structure, constantly refreshing the limits of accurate forming

optical grating – tungsten and the cooler are parts with high accuracy. 5cm-high colorful terracotta warriors, colorful pens, ornaments of qinling, cicadas, da ke ding and chain bags and other artworks demonstrate blt’s dedication to accurate forming.

the tungsten optical grating (size 20mm x 70mm x 75mm) used in the medical field is a typical component of blt in terms of high accuracy. blt, overcoming the challenges of high melting point (3422°c) of the material, high accuracy in thin-wall machining (0.1±0.025mm) and high requirements for structural stability (three-point bending ≥200n), keeps the forming accuracy within 0.025mm, and achieves a three-point bending strength of 285n and the opacity of nearly 100%. eventually, the tungsten optical grating manufactured by blt successfully replaces the imported products allowing customers to use the blt-s200gx for mass production and engineering applications.

cooler

the aerospace cooler, with a size of φ162mm x 100mm, is made of stainless steel, costs a printing time of 166 hours, and is manufactured by blt-s310. conventional coolers have 852 runner tubes and the wall of the runner tube is only 1mm in thick, posing very demanding requirements on printing accuracy, internal density and equipment stability. the use of 3d printing for integral forming not only shortens the processing cycle, but also provides stable part quality meeting the standards for engineering applications.

 

 


# “bright” materials, expanding the application scenario of new materials

k418 – impeller, k452 – small blade, in738 – rotor blade, ti2alnb – nozzle shell, ni-ti – vascular scaffold, molybdenum – electrode, tantalum – acetabula cup. among them, k418, k452, in738 and ti2alnb are used in aerospace engines and other applications with a strong demand for high temperature resistance; copper-chromium-zirconium-molybdenum alloy is chiefly used in the electronics industry; while nickel-titanium alloy and tantalum are widely used in the biomedical field.

the vascular scaffold-nickel-titanium alloy for biomedical applications measures 8 mm x 8 mm x 100 mm. blt has developed a nickel-titanium printing process based on the application characteristics of vascular scaffold, which enables the printing of refined structure of 0.1-0.2 mm. the material is super-elastic and has a good shape memory effect after deformation training.

# optimal design, driving design innovation with additive manufacturing minds

blt displayed the pure lattice structure load-bearing cylinder-aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy, the blt powder bottle mold and various lightweight water route molds, demonstrating the ability of blt in design optimization and equipment forming of lightweight, cooling runners and topological structures.

the pure lattice structure load-bearing cylinder-aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy, with the size of φ580mm x 400mm and weight of 3.283kg, is formed by the system blt-s600, costing 120 hours for forming. the material used for this product is the high-strength aluminum alloy which is typically a crack-prone material with high forming risks. the part consists of the lattice structure with a large span of around 25mm and the overall structure design is based on the characteristics of the 3d printing process and is designed as the self-forming structure without the need to add support, while overcoming the difficult points in forming by improving the process parameters.

the cooling runners inside the water route mold closely fit the irregular surface of the mold core, which shortens the cooling time, enhances the cooling uniformity and reduces the curved wing deformation of the plastic product.

# collaboration, creating value for customers

amongst them, the rock density probe is long in size and irregular in structure, making it difficult, risky and long in cycle time for the traditional process of machining, milling and boring. the slm process allows the probes to be formed in one pass, saving 60% of the processing time and 20% of the process costs, and increasing the surface hardness of the probes by 5%-6%.
